CHETLAT ISLAND

Chetlat is the northernmost inhabited island, located 432km off Cochin. According to history Chetlat had undergone cruel treatments of the Portuguese pirates in the 16th century. A huge number of natives were killed and others imprisoned.Coconut trees are plenty here. You will also find Cheerani Paruthi (A species of cotton tree), jack fruit trees and Murunga (Drumstick). Coir twisting and mat weaving are the people’s common vocation here.

In the shallow lagoons there are two common varieties of fish—tuna and skip jacks. Whales, water hens, tortoises, cats and birds are found on the islands. The diversity of the island provides a home for the animals that inhabit it.
